On January 21, 2026, President Trump openly declared at the World Economic Forum in Davos that "sometimes you need a dictator" and referred to himself as a dictator. This represents a dangerous escalation from his previous reluctance to embrace such characterizations. This statement did not occur in isolation. Over the past month, Trump has suggested canceling the 2026 midterm elections at least twice. He has threatened to crush protests with the military and proposed sending masked agents door-to-door to round up anyone who cannot prove their citizenship. These are not rhetorical flourishes. They are direct threats to the constitutional framework that protects every American's right to vote and participate in free and fair elections. The 2026 midterm elections are approaching, and we cannot afford to treat these statements as empty rhetoric. When a sitting president openly embraces dictatorship and suggests canceling elections, Congress must respond with concrete safeguards. I am asking you to publicly commit to protecting the integrity of the 2026 midterms and to support legislation that prevents any executive action to delay, cancel, or interfere with scheduled elections. Our democracy depends on the peaceful transfer of power and regular elections as outlined in the Constitution. No president has the authority to cancel elections, regardless of their stated justifications. I need to know that you will stand firmly against any attempt to undermine this fundamental right. The time for measured responses has passed. I am asking you to speak out clearly and forcefully against these authoritarian threats and to work with colleagues across party lines to ensure that the 2026 elections proceed as scheduled without interference. Our republic depends on leaders who will defend it when it is under direct attack.
