7 million dollar voucher line item

To: Gov. Pillen, Sen. Wordekemper

From: A verified voter in Valley, NE

January 16

I am writing today to question the seven million dollar school voucher line item in the governor’s budget proposal under the labor department. Nebraska voters have had multiple opportunities to vote on school vouchers and every time our community has voted it down. This line item goes directly against the wishes of the constituents. Vouchers are only a desire of the national Republican Party. They are not a desire of Nebraska residents. When we vote, we always vote this issue down because our schools, especially our rural schools, cannot afford to lose this level of funding. This money would go directly into the pockets of the wealthy who can already afford to send their kids to private school and who already have access to private schools. The average Nebraskan will only see a reduction in services in their local public school. Putting this line item under the labor department shows that the Governor knows that it is not what the voters want. He is trying to hide it. Nebraskans are smarter than that. We do not want vouchers. We want healthy public schools. Listen to your constituents. It is an election year, after all. Remove this line item. Put the money back into our public schools.
