Student success & taxpayer savings plan

To: Sen. Collins, Sen. King, Rep. Pingree

From: A constituent in Eliot, ME

May 1

With the recent house committee passing of the “student success and taxpayer savings” plan, over 42 million Americans with student loans- myself included- stand to get pushed into financial strain or ruin simply because they pursued higher education and incurred the debt necessary to do so in a country with the highest education costs in the world. This is insanity. Punishing those who are already struggling under the effects of inflation and increasing costs due to tariffs will continue to send the economy into a downward spiral as people are forced to default on loans and decrease their spending in an already pinched economy. If the government wants to support the economy and boost taxpayer morale, you will not add yet another financial burden to those who are already struggling. I am already feeling the pinch and making challenging decisions about how to spend my limited funds. Stand up against this legislation and protect the borrowers of Maine from being punished for getting an education. This is not a bill about “student success”- it is an attempt to deter Americans from pursuing education, sending our country even further down the tubes and increasing the educational access gap between the elites and the lower and middle class populations. The oligarchy strikes again.
