Trans people have a right to exist in public
To: Rep. Schakowsky
From: A verified voter in Chicago, IL
November 21
I am writing to you about the trans bathroom ban being pushed by Republican members of the House. As a trans woman, I was extremely angry to see the ban at the Capitol go through with what seemed like little resistance from you. Rep McBride, as well as trans staffers and constituents have the right to use the bathroom in peace. I do not understand why there has not been more outcry from the Democratic caucus -- only a handful have made public statements. I am also upset to see that Rep Mace is now trying to push a ban on trans bathroom use on all federal lands. This ban would essentially make those places off limits to trans people. Imagine being unable to use a bathroom at a park or museum. In a time when we need our leaders most, it hurts to see this happen with what seems like little pushback from you. Trans people deserve to exist in public. Your failure to speak for us here makes me worry you will be similarly quiet if they start banning our health care. If they ban my hormone therapy, not only will the effects on my mental health be severe -- as a trans woman post-GCS, I will suffer severe physical effects. Please do more -- preferably in a way that makes your support clearly visible.
