Vote no on the SAVE Act. This bill is an unconstitutional poll tax that will disproportionately disenfranchise women voters.
Requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote creates the exact barrier the 24th Amendment prohibits. Millions of Americans, particularly women who have changed their names through marriage, lack easy access to birth certificates or naturalization papers. Obtaining these documents costs money and time that many working families don't have. That's a poll tax by another name.
Women are hit hardest by this requirement. One in three women of voting age don't have documentation that reflects their current legal name. After the 19th Amendment finally guaranteed women the right to vote in 1920, we shouldn't pass laws that functionally reverse that progress by making it harder for women to register.
We already have systems to verify citizenship. States cross-check voter rolls against DMV records and Social Security databases. Noncitizen voting is vanishingly rare because the penalties are severe: deportation and permanent bars to citizenship. The SAVE Act solves a problem that doesn't exist while creating real barriers for eligible citizens.
Protect every American's right to vote. Oppose the SAVE Act.
