Strong objection to any U.S. attempt to take Greenland—especially by force

To: Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree, Sen. King

From: A verified voter in Westbrook, ME

January 17

I am writing as a constituent to express my strong objection to any Administration effort to pursue a U.S. “takeover” of Greenland—especially any contemplation of coercion or the use of force. I urge you to publicly and firmly oppose any such policy, and to use every constitutional tool available to prevent it. Greenland is not a prize to be taken. It is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a sovereign nation and one of our longstanding allies. Any attempt to seize territory from an ally—by threat, economic coercion, or military force—would be a profound betrayal of U.S. values and a catastrophic strategic error. Such action would also be flatly inconsistent with international law and with the commitments that have kept Europe and North America secure for generations. As a NATO member, Denmark is protected by the Alliance’s core principle of collective defense. Any U.S. move against Danish territory would shatter alliance cohesion, undermine the credibility of NATO, and hand our adversaries a propaganda victory they could not buy with a trillion dollars. Even discussing the possibility of force against an ally corrodes trust and deterrence. I am an Army veteran. I served in support of the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. I also served in support of the alliances and international order that have prevented great-power war and protected American security and prosperity. The idea that the United States would threaten or use force to take territory from a democratic ally is the opposite of what many of us wore the uniform to defend. If the Administration believes U.S. interests in the Arctic require greater access, investment, or cooperation, those goals must be pursued through diplomacy, mutual consent, and lawful agreements—not intimidation and certainly not war-making. Congress has a solemn duty under Article I to check reckless foreign policy and to ensure that the United States does not stumble into an illegal and immoral conflict. Accordingly, I ask that you: 1. State publicly that the United States must not seek to take Greenland by coercion or force. 2. Affirm Congress’s war powers and oppose any unauthorized use of military force in relation to Denmark/Greenland. 3. Support oversight and legislation—including funding restrictions if necessary—to prevent any planning, preparation, or deployment for such a purpose. 4. Reinforce the U.S. commitment to NATO and to the territorial integrity of our allies. Please let me know your position and what steps you will take to ensure the United States remains faithful to our Constitution, our treaty commitments, and the rule of law.
