Cancel the upcoming recess and keep the House in session until Congress passes meaningful, bipartisan AI safeguards. This is not a future problem. It is happening right now, and every week of delay is a week of unacceptable exposure. Anthropic just reported disrupting attempts to use its Claude AI to support biological weapons development. The same report revealed a Chinese government-linked operation targeting Uyghurs and an Iran-linked effort using AI to develop targeting recommendations against U.S. naval forces. These are not hypotheticals. House leaders already canceled two weeks of September session to give members more campaign time, and now another multi-week recess is planned. That is the wrong call when foreign actors are actively weaponizing AI against American interests. Reps. Liccardo, Whitesides, Trahan, and Lieu are right: "While AI safety experts and Americans increasingly urge action to confront this conflagration of risk, Congress fiddles." Stay in session. Move legislation. The risks of mass cybersecurity breaches and chemical or biological weapons enabled by AI do not pause for election season.
