Repeal the SAFE for Kids Act. This law, finalized by Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Hochul on July 28 and taking effect January 25, 2027, forces every New Yorker — adult or minor — to hand over government IDs, face scans, phone numbers, or email addresses just to use a social media feed. That's not child protection. That's a statewide biometric surveillance mandate dressed up as one. James dismissed the privacy objection outright, calling it "not a question of privacy." But collecting government IDs and selfies that platforms can tie to a real identity absolutely is a privacy question. Platforms have a well-documented history of retaining data they promised to delete, and in the AI era, "de-identified" data is barely a speed bump to re-identification. Every breach, hack, or bug now puts New Yorkers' biometric records at risk — records they were compelled to submit just to scroll a timeline. This law treats adults as suspects who must prove their age to access the internet and trusts the same platforms it claims to regulate to safeguard the data it forces them to collect. That's an unacceptable trade-off. Repeal it.
