An Open Letter

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Barrett

From: A constituent in East Lansing, MI

February 2, 2025

I strongly urge you to take action to prevent the dismantling of USAID. Eliminating this vital agency would have catastrophic consequences for global health, humanitarian aid, and pandemic prevention efforts that safeguard American lives. USAID was established by Congress as an independent agency focused on international development and aid. Any attempt to dissolve or absorb it into the State Department would require an act of Congress, not just an executive order. Circumventing the lawful process raises serious legal concerns. Moreover, USAID's programs are critical for containing disease outbreaks, providing disaster relief, promoting education and economic development, and upholding democratic values worldwide. Its work aligns with American interests and has enjoyed bipartisan support. Undermining this agency would destabilize efforts to address poverty, conflict, and global challenges that ultimately impact U.S. national security. I implore you to respect USAID's congressionally-mandated independence and oppose any unlawful efforts to dismantle this essential institution. Preserving its vital mission is not only a moral imperative but protects American interests at home and abroad. The American people deserve full transparency on any plans impacting USAID and its indispensable work.
