I am writing to urge you to vote against SB 1632 because it violates fundamental First Amendment protections that are essential to our democracy.
This bill represents a dangerous overreach that would restrict constitutionally protected speech. The First Amendment exists precisely to protect expression that may be controversial or unpopular, and any legislation that abridges these rights sets a troubling precedent. When government begins limiting speech through statutory means, it opens the door to further erosion of civil liberties that Floridians depend on.
SB 1632 would create a chilling effect on free expression across Florida. Citizens would self-censor out of fear of legal consequences, undermining the open exchange of ideas that strengthens our communities and holds institutions accountable. This is particularly concerning for journalists, activists, educators, and everyday Floridians who rely on First Amendment protections to participate fully in civic life.
The courts have consistently struck down similar legislation in other states as unconstitutional, which means Florida taxpayers would likely bear the cost of expensive litigation defending an indefensible law. These resources would be better spent addressing the real challenges facing our state, from infrastructure needs on our congested interstates to education funding.
As someone who calls Florida home, I am deeply concerned about the direction this legislation would take our state. Our constitution protects free speech for good reason, and that protection should not be weakened by legislative action. I ask that you stand with your constituents in defending our constitutional rights by voting no on SB 1632.
Please confirm your position on this bill and your commitment to protecting First Amendment freedoms for all Floridians.
