I am deeply concerned by the numerous allegations of misconduct surrounding Pete Hegseth's leadership roles at veteran-focused non-profit organizations. The report details disturbing claims of financial mismanagement, frequent drunkenness, fostering a hostile work environment for women, spending non-profit funds on personal expenses, and fostering an inappropriate culture of parties and "trysts". These behaviors are unacceptable for someone being considered for such a high position overseeing our national security. The Department of Defense has immense responsibility in protecting our nation and its people. It requires ethical, responsible leadership that treats all employees with dignity and respect. The allegations against Hegseth paint a troubling picture of toxic leadership that is antithetical to these core values. There are also credible reports of sexual assault allegations against him that deserve further scrutiny. I urge a full and impartial investigation into these serious claims before any consideration of confirming Hegseth for Secretary of Defense. Our military deserves principled leadership committed to professionalism, integrity and creating an environment free from harassment, discrimination and misuse of funds. The gravity of this Cabinet role demands we uphold the highest standards. Please do not proceed with this nomination until Hegseth's full record and fitness for office has been thoroughly vetted.
