Urgent Concern: Attacks on the Rule of Law and Judicial Independence
I am writing as a concerned constituent from Grand Traverse County in light of recent reports, including a March 11, 2025 NPR article titled “American Bar Association Decries Trump Administration Attacks on Judges, Lawyers” (link), which outlines troubling efforts to undermine the independence of the judiciary and intimidate legal professionals.
According to the article, the American Bar Association has raised alarm about persistent and escalating attacks on judges and lawyers, particularly those involved in cases related to former President Trump. These efforts appear designed to erode public confidence in the judicial system and threaten the foundational principle that no one is above the law. There have been dozens of reports of intimidation of judges and lawyers. It feels like American rule of law, and democracy at large, is under attack.
As your constituent, I want to know what you are doing to safeguard the integrity of our legal system and defend the rule of law from political interference. Specifically:
What actions are you taking to hold accountable those who threaten or undermine judges, lawyers, and the impartial administration of justice?
How are you working to ensure that our legal institutions remain independent and free from political retaliation?
These are not abstract concerns—when the rule of law is weakened, so too is our democracy. I urge you to speak out clearly and take concrete legislative or oversight actions to address this issue.
I would appreciate a response outlining your stance and any initiatives you are supporting or planning to introduce in defense of judicial independence.
Thank you for your time and your service to our community.
