Protect the Right to Vote — Oppose the SAVE Act!

To: Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth, Rep. Casten

From: A verified voter in Villa Park, IL

March 17

Protect the Right to Vote — Oppose the SAVE Act! As you know, under current US law, it is illegal for non-citizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. Additionally, we have robust processes to ensure that only eligible voters are casting ballots. However, the Senate is set to vote on a bill that not only requires all eligible voters to provide citizenship documentation to register to vote, but also to bring photo ID to the ballot box.  Under this law, each and every American citizen would have to show very specific documents, like a passport or an original birth certificate, in person when registering to vote, updating their voter registration, and casting their ballot.  The SAVE act pretends to care about voting integrity, despite a) sufficient laws already in place and b) repeated proof that fraud -- attempted or successful is so low as to be almost insignificant. What this law really does, and I think many of my fellow Americans agree with me, is actively disenfranchise and LIMIT voting! For people with name changes -- especially women, elderly, people of color, and our overseas citizens and military members (and family). It is a poll tax, it is active voter disenfranchisement and suppression poorly dressed up as "integrity". We the people, need you to vote NO on this bill and other measures like it. I urge you to continue speaking out against this bill, loudly, in words and actions. Protect democracy and the right to vote. Thank you.
