The Monroe Doctrine doesn't protect democracy. It protects American corporate interests and has done so since United Fruit was bribing governments in the 1900s. It is a permission slip for imperialism dressed up as regional protection. It needs to be retired, reformed, or replaced with something that doesn't treat an entire hemisphere like hot garbage. US presidents have spent the past two centuries using the Monroe Doctrine, and the later expansion by Roosevelt, to justify overthrowing governments, backing brutal dictators, funding death squads, and systematically destabilizing every country south of Texas that had the nerve to lean socialist. When the people fleeing the chaos, corruption, and violence that US foreign policy helped create showed up at our border looking for safety, we called them an invasion, built walls, and implemented policies specifically designed to traumatize children as a deterrent. End the ability for the shuffling meat-waffle we call POTUS to use the Monroe Doctrine to justify actions that any reasonable person would classify as war crimes.
