Recognize and Act Against Transgender Genocide

To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Walberg, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

March 18

I need you to publicly recognize that transgender people are facing genocide and take immediate action to stop it. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as acts committed with intent to destroy a group, in whole or in part. This includes killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to bring about physical destruction, imposing measures to prevent births, and forcibly transferring children. Transgender people are experiencing all of these acts right now simply for existing as themselves. This is not hyperbole. The United States Holocaust Museum's own definition makes clear that genocide encompasses both cultural erasure and physical elimination. What we are witnessing is the systematic attempt to erase transgender people from public life through legislation that denies healthcare, criminalizes existence, and tears families apart. You have the power to stop this. Vote against every bill that restricts transgender healthcare, bans transgender people from public spaces, or enables discrimination. Co-sponsor legislation that protects transgender rights. Use your platform to call this what it is: genocide. History will judge those who stayed silent.
