Protect open internet, rein in undue TikTok ban

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Pres. Biden, Rep. Deluzio

From: A constituent in Pittsburgh, PA

January 8

The potential nationwide TikTok ban raises significant concerns about free speech and the open exchange of ideas online. While the government cites national security risks, the lack of due process and transparency in this case is alarming. Setting a precedent where platforms can be shuttered without providing clear evidence undermines constitutional protections and poses a threat to journalism and marginalized voices. TikTok has become a vital space for LGBTQ+ creators, activists, and independent journalists to build communities and share stories often overlooked by traditional media outlets. Losing this platform would silence crucial perspectives and limit opportunities for diverse content to reach wider audiences. We must ensure any actions impacting freedom of expression and access to information are grounded in robust legal procedures and public accountability. A blanket ban without an open, fair trial would be an unacceptable overreach with disturbing implications for online discourse and press freedoms. Reasonable solutions that protect user privacy while preserving open channels for creative expression and reporting should be the aim. Rushing into a sweeping TikTok prohibition could do more harm than good.
