I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to oppose any resolution, bill, or legal action aimed at overturning the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Marriage equality is not a partisan issue — it is a matter of basic freedom, dignity, and equal protection under the law. Same-sex couples have built lives, families, and communities under the protections Obergefell guarantees. Rolling back these rights would cause irreparable harm to millions of Americans and undermine the fundamental principles of liberty and equality. Public support for marriage equality is at an all-time high, with nearly 70% of Americans in favor. Attempts to reverse it do not reflect the will of the people, but rather the goals of a small group seeking to impose their personal beliefs on the entire nation. The Respect for Marriage Act passed in 2022 affirms that all legally performed marriages — including same-sex and interracial marriages — must be recognized nationwide. Any effort to undo Obergefell would put our country on a dangerous path toward stripping away rights that Americans have relied on for nearly a decade. I am asking you to take a clear and public stand: reject any measure, resolution, or court filing that calls for overturning Obergefell or undermining marriage equality in any form. Protect the rights of your constituents, protect the stability of American families, and uphold the promise of equal justice under law. History will remember the leaders who chose equality over discrimination. Please be one of them.
