The Cost of Hegseth and Trump Politicizing our Military

To: Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree, Sen. King

June 28

I am writing to express my deepest concern regarding Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s ongoing purge of top-tier military leadership, most recently exemplified by the forced retirement of Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa.  Gen. Donahue is a highly decorated, combat-tested leader who served honorably as the commander of Delta Force units and the 82nd Airborne Division. Sidelining an officer of his exceptional caliber after only 18 months—under the guise of reducing bureaucracy—sends a chilling message to our armed forces. This is not about trimming fat; it is part of a systematic pattern. By pushing out independent, highly experienced commanders like Gen. Donahue, Gen. Randy George, and Gen. CQ Brown, the administration appears intent on weakening the apolitical foundation of our military.  Replacing seasoned constitutional patriots with partisan loyalists threatens our national security and the very fabric of our democracy. A military must be loyal to the Constitution and the American people, not to the personal or political whims of the executive branch. This coordinated effort to destabilize the military's top brass appears designed to strip the armed forces of independent oversight and centralize total control within the White House. As your constituent, I urge you to exercise strict congressional oversight. Please challenge these unprecedented dismissals, demand transparency from the Pentagon, and protect our military from being weaponized as a political tool.
