I am writing to insist your office take action against Trump’s purge of our military. His firings are authoritarian and dangerous.
At the very minimum I am asking you to vote no on Trump’s picks to replace the officers he’s fired.
This was an extraordinary action by Trump, and I’m concerned we’re not seeing an extraordinary response by the rest of government.
They are getting rid of leaders who are committed to the Constitution and the rule of law, and replacing them with nominees whose main qualification is their personal loyalty to Trump. That is the sort of thing dictators do. Secretary Hegseth very clearly said they don’t want officers who will be “roadblocks to anything that happens.” I believe we need generals who aren’t afraid to say “we can’t break the law.”
The purge will also make us weaker and less safe. Instead of promoting the best and most qualified, the Trump Administration is promoting whoever tells them what they want to hear. And it seems clear when they say they are getting rid of “woke” and “DEI” they mean “getting rid of leaders who aren’t white men.” These are terrible messages to send to the troops and future recruits. They will drive good people away from our armed forces and encourage poor judgment and dishonesty from those who wish to make the military their career.
For the good of the country and for the sake of an effective military, this cannot be treated as business as usual.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
