I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed use of drone strikes against targets within Mexico, a sovereign nation and one of our closest neighbors.
While I understand and share concerns about transnational crime and the growing threats posed by drug cartels, responding with unilateral military action—especially airstrikes—on Mexican soil would be a grave mistake, morally, strategically, and diplomatically.
First and foremost, drone strikes in Mexico would be a violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty. It would set a dangerous precedent for how nations handle cross-border challenges and could severely damage the relationship between the United States and Mexico, risking cooperation on trade, immigration, security, and regional stability.
Furthermore, the use of drone strikes has a history of causing unintended civilian casualties, inflaming anti-American sentiment, and destabilizing already fragile regions. Applying such a strategy so close to our own borders, in a densely populated nation that shares deep economic, cultural, and familial ties with the United States, is not only irresponsible—it is reckless.
We should be strengthening partnerships, improving intelligence-sharing, and investing in collaborative solutions that address the root causes of crime and instability. Violence cannot be the answer to violence. If we cross this line, we risk becoming the very force we claim to oppose.
As a citizen, I urge you to reject any proposal that seeks to use drone strikes in Mexico. Let us lead with diplomacy, compassion, and vision—not fear and aggression.
