Repeal $75 Billion ICE Funding and Vote NO on DHS Bill

To: Rep. Dingell, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Ann Arbor, MI

February 1

I am writing to demand that you vote to repeal the $75 billion allocated to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the "One Big Beautiful Bill" and vote NO on the current Department of Homeland Security funding bill that includes $10 billion for ICE and $18 billion for Customs and Border Protection. With a deadline two weeks from January 30 to avert a federal government shutdown, this is the moment to take a stand against an agency that has proven itself lawless and dangerous. On Saturday, January 25, 2025, CBP agents killed Alex Pretti, a US citizen, nurse, and legal observer, in Minneapolis. This follows the killing of Renee Good in the same city. These are not isolated incidents but evidence of systematic lawlessness. ICE is operating outside constitutional boundaries, conducting warrantless arrests, detaining and deporting US citizens, engaging in racial profiling, and allowing agents to hide behind masks and qualified immunity while meeting arrest quotas. The current funding structure rewards this behavior with nearly $140 billion combined for ICE and CBP. This is unconscionable when these agencies refuse to follow the law they claim to enforce. Rep. Tom Suozzi, one of seven House Democrats who initially voted for the DHS funding bill, has already expressed regret, acknowledging he "failed to view the DHS funding vote as a referendum on the illegal and immoral conduct of ICE in Minneapolis." I urge you to support the conditions outlined by the Senate Democratic Caucus: an independent federal-state investigation including Minnesota officials, a ban on ICE face masks, mandatory body cameras, a ban on roving ICE patrols, a ban on administrative warrants that bypass judges, and an end to arrest quotas. These are minimum standards for accountability. Repealing this funding is not about immigration policy. It is about refusing to finance agencies that kill American citizens with impunity. Vote NO on additional DHS funding and YES on repealing the $75 billion ICE allocation.
