I am writing as a constituent deeply disturbed by the recent FBI raids on student homes in Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and Canton, which appear to be part of an investigation tied to campus activism at the University of Michigan. These aggressive actions, apparently coordinated with university administration, are part of a broader pattern of repression aimed at silencing student dissent—especially around Palestinian solidarity and opposition to U.S.-funded violence abroad.
The involvement of federal law enforcement to intimidate and criminalize students exercising their First Amendment rights is unacceptable. Peaceful protest, speech, and organizing are core tenets of our democracy. Yet, the University of Michigan has not only failed to protect its students—it has actively endangered them by escalating its response and cooperating with federal surveillance.
Students now face raids, harassment, and investigations for participating in protests and advocating for justice. The university has shut down nearly every legitimate avenue for protest. Speaking out now comes with real risk of criminalization. This is not just a violation of student rights—it is a threat to the right to dissent itself.
I urge you to denounce these actions publicly, to demand transparency from the FBI and the University of Michigan, and to push for protections for students and activists. We cannot allow academic institutions and law enforcement to treat political engagement as a crime.
Silencing protest does not solve conflict—it deepens it. And it sends a chilling message to all who dare to speak out.
