I am writing to express my deep concern over the appointment of Thomas Fugate to the Department of Homeland Security's counterterrorism division, specifically the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3). This 22-year-old's lack of experience in national security poses a significant risk to our country's safety, as evidenced by the recent attack on our National Guard. Mr. Fugate's appointment to such a critical role is alarming. His background consists of an internship at the Heritage Foundation and work on the Trump campaign before joining DHS as a 'special assistant' in an immigration office. This limited experience falls far short of the expertise required for a position that directly impacts our nation's security. The consequences of this ill-advised appointment are already manifesting. The recent attack on our National Guardsmen can be attributed, in large part, to the inexperience and inadequate leadership within CP3. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for experienced, qualified professionals in key counterterrorism positions. Furthermore, we are facing heightened tensions with Iran, including potential retaliation for the destruction of three Iranian nuclear sites. In this volatile international climate, we cannot afford to have inexperienced individuals in crucial national security roles. I urge you to take immediate action to remove Mr. Fugate from his position at CP3 and replace him with a qualified, experienced counterterrorism expert. Our national security and the lives of our service members depend on having competent leadership in these critical roles. Please prioritize this matter and ensure that our counterterrorism efforts are led by individuals with the necessary expertise and experience to protect our nation effectively.
