Defending Fundamental Rights and Basic Needs
To: Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray
From: A constituent in Seattle, WA
November 10
I am writing as a constituent deeply concerned about the Democratic Party’s current strategy—or lack thereof—in countering the increasingly extreme Republican legislative agenda. Just last week, Democrats achieved important electoral victories across the country—successes that should have demonstrated the strength of the party’s values and the broad support for its vision. Yet, within days, Democratic leadership appeared to concede to Republican pressure to avoid a government shutdown without securing any meaningful policy gains in return. Even more alarming are emerging reports that Republican lawmakers may attempt to tie a national abortion ban to healthcare affordability efforts—a proposal that is both morally indefensible and profoundly dangerous. I am struggling to understand how, despite these electoral wins, Democrats continue to lose ground on such critical issues. What the country needs right now is not accommodation, but principled, visible, coordinated leadership that protects the safety, health, and dignity of all people living in the United States. That includes unwavering advocacy for: • Affordable access to all forms of healthcare, including reproductive, mental health, preventive, and long-term care services; • Protection and expansion of food assistance programs such as SNAP and WIC, which safeguard millions of families from hunger; and • The safety and human rights of immigrant communities, who continue to face unacceptable abuses—including unlawful detentions, family separations, and acts of violence committed under the guise of immigration enforcement. The crimes and kidnappings perpetrated by ICE agents against individuals and families seeking safety in this country are a national disgrace that demand accountability and reform. These issues are not partisan talking points—they are fundamental to the wellbeing, stability, and moral integrity of our nation. I urge you and your colleagues to communicate a clear plan for countering extremist policy demands and to lead proactively with courage, compassion, and clarity of purpose. Thank you for your time, attention, and continued service. I look forward to hearing how you plan to strengthen protections for healthcare access, food security, and immigrant safety in the critical months ahead.
