Taxpayers Deserve Transparency from Every Federal Agent

To: Sen. Hagerty, Sen. Blackburn

Dear Senator, I’m writing as a concerned Tennessean to ask that you address, as part of upcoming budget and oversight discussions, the growing issue of federal agents wearing masks or face coverings that conceal their identity while operating within our communities. While I understand that certain tactical situations or undercover operations may require anonymity, it’s deeply troubling to see uniformed federal officers interacting with the public—often in routine or peaceful settings—while their faces are hidden. Citizens have a right to know who is representing their government, especially when those individuals carry weapons, execute warrants, or enforce laws among the people they serve. Transparency and accountability are foundational to public trust in law enforcement, and secrecy erodes both. Federal agencies should not be permitted to deploy masked personnel except in narrowly defined, exceptional cases where safety or national security clearly demand it. In open operations, every agent’s face and name should be visible, identifiable, and accountable to the American taxpayer. Appropriations language or oversight directives can clarify this standard and prohibit funding for unnecessary concealment practices. Tennessee values honesty, fairness, and service with integrity. I urge you to make this a priority as Congress reviews agency budgets and law enforcement procedures. We need to restore confidence that those acting under the authority of the United States government are doing so openly, lawfully, and without intimidation or secrecy. Thank you for your consistent service and leadership.
