Oppose Federal Takeover of State Elections and Defend Constitutional Authority

To: Rep. Dingell, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Ann Arbor, MI

February 4

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose President Trump's recent call to "nationalize" the U.S. voting system and to hold his administration accountable for this unconstitutional proposal. On February 2, 2025, during an appearance on Dan Bongino's podcast, President Trump urged Republicans at the federal level to seize control of elections from states, specifically mentioning taking over voting in "at least many, 15 places" and targeting states he claims are "so crooked." This proposal directly violates the U.S. Constitution, which grants authority to states to set "the times, places and manner" of holding federal elections. While Congress has the power to "make or alter" such rules, Trump's call for federal takeover represents an unprecedented assault on state sovereignty and the separation of powers that has defined our electoral system since the nation's founding. This proposal appears designed to undermine election results that Republicans find unfavorable rather than address any legitimate security concerns. Trump continues to make unfounded claims about the 2020 election more than five years after losing to Joe Biden, and he has falsely claimed that Democrats are bringing migrants into the country to vote illegally, despite the fact that only U.S. citizens are allowed to vote in federal and state elections. These baseless accusations provide no justification for dismantling constitutional protections. The timing is particularly concerning given the FBI's execution of a search warrant at a Fulton County elections center near Atlanta on January 28, 2025. According to the New York Times, Trump spoke directly by phone with FBI agents who executed the search warrant, connected to them by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. This direct presidential involvement in an ongoing investigation raises serious questions about political interference in law enforcement. I urge you to speak out publicly against this proposal, defend the constitutional authority of states to administer their own elections, and demand transparency regarding the administration's involvement in election-related investigations. Our democracy depends on elected officials defending constitutional principles even when politically inconvenient.
