Defending presidential term limits, democratic checks and balances
To: Rep. Green
From: A constituent in Pleasantville, TN
January 29
The Constitution's 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two terms promotes democratic values by ensuring regular peaceful transfers of power. Amending it to allow a president to serve more than two terms would concentrate power in one individual, undermining essential checks and balances. The founders wisely instituted term limits to protect against the dangers of unchecked executive authority accruing to any single person over time. Extending a president's tenure beyond the established two-term precedent could erode faith in the resilience of American democracy. The nation has survived numerous contentious transfers of power precisely because of its commitment to constitutional norms like presidential term limits. Rather than revising this critical safeguard, efforts would be better directed at substantive policy debates within the framework of laws and institutional constraints that have long preserved liberty and self-governance.
