Block the proposed $1.776 billion "Truth and Justice Commission" and demand full congressional oversight over how Judgment Fund dollars are spent. This deal — structured to let Trump drop his own lawsuits against agencies he controls in exchange for a taxpayer-funded payout — is self-dealing on a scale that should alarm every member of Congress regardless of party.
The fund would be drawn from the Treasury's Judgment Fund, bypassing any congressional appropriation vote. Four of five commissioners would be appointed by the attorney general and removable by the president without cause. The commission has no obligation to disclose how it makes decisions. Entities associated with Trump are not categorically barred from filing claims, and January 6 defendants are explicitly among the potential beneficiaries. Rep. Jamie Raskin called it "pure fraud and highway robbery," and he's right.
Taxpayers deserve to know exactly who receives this money and why. No fund of this size should operate without transparency requirements, independent oversight, and congressional authorization. Push for legislation that subjects the Judgment Fund to mandatory disclosure rules and blocks any commission structured this way from distributing a single dollar.
