Support Iranian Protesters Facing Violent Crackdown

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

January 10

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action in support of the Iranian people who are risking their lives for freedom and democracy. Since December 28, 2025, protests that began in Tehran over economic collapse have evolved into nationwide anti-government demonstrations, and the regime's response has been brutal. At least 48 protesters have been killed according to human rights groups, with BBC confirming 22 deaths independently. Approximately 2,200 people have been arrested. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed protesters as "vandals" and vowed the regime "will not back down" from cracking down on what he calls "trouble-makers." The government has imposed a nationwide internet blackout, cutting off WhatsApp, landlines, and Iranian media websites to prevent protesters from organizing and sharing information with the world. These protests have spread to more than 50 towns and cities across Iran, including Kurdish-majority regions. Verified videos show large crowds in Tehran, Isfahan, Khorramabad, Babol, and other locations, despite state media showing empty streets. This is happening at a particularly vulnerable moment for Iran, with the country facing international sanctions, high-profile corruption among senior officials, economic hardship, and a weakened regional position following recent conflicts. I urge you to publicly condemn the Iranian regime's violence against peaceful protesters and call for the restoration of internet access so Iranians can communicate freely. Please work with colleagues to introduce or support legislation that imposes targeted sanctions on Iranian officials responsible for ordering violence against civilians. The United States should also coordinate with European allies to provide technical assistance that helps Iranians circumvent the internet blackout. The Iranian people are showing extraordinary courage in demanding their basic rights. They deserve our vocal support and concrete action, not silence.
