Consider Alternatives to TikTok Ban for Data Security Balancing
To: Sen. Stabenow, Sen. Peters

The recent House bill requiring ByteDance to divest from TikTok raises concerns. While the apprehension about potential data transfer to Beijing is understandable, TikTok has consistently denied such practices, asserting that data is stored on U.S. servers. Previous attempts to restrict the platform have been legally challenged and blocked. A ban could inadvertently create a monopoly for Meta's Reels in the short-form video market, which may not be in the best interest of consumers. Therefore, it is requested to consider alternatives to a ban, such as stricter regulations or oversight mechanisms, to ensure data security without stifling competition. This approach could balance national security concerns with the need for a diverse and competitive digital landscape.
