Reject criminalizing dissent, protect democracy and electoral integrity
To: Sen. Johnson, Rep. McCalmon, Gov. Lee
From: A constituent in Nolensville, TN
February 1, 2025
This extreme legislation poses a grave threat to democratic values by criminalizing local officials solely based on how they vote on "sanctuary city" policies. Threatening public servants with felony charges and prosecution for exercising their right to vote undermines the core principles of our democracy and the rule of law. Officials should never face criminal penalties simply for representing the will of their constituents through their votes. Dissent and policy debates are vital components of a healthy democracy. Penalizing officials for their votes sets a dangerous authoritarian precedent that erodes fundamental freedoms and democratic norms. I urge you to reject any measures that would criminalize legitimate policy positions or infringe on officials' abilities to vote their conscience without fear of prosecution. Protecting robust public discourse and the integrity of our electoral process must be paramount.
