The SAVE Act would create severe barriers for millions of eligible voters by requiring burdensome proof of citizenship just to register or re-register to vote. According to the Brennan Center's research, over 21 million citizens lack ready access to documents like passports or birth certificates that would be required. Many more, such as married women who changed their names, would face additional hurdles matching documents. This unnecessary law risks disenfranchising rural voters, Native Americans, and others who live far from election offices where they would need to register in person. Rather than increasing confidence, the SAVE Act undermines faith in elections which already have robust safeguards against extremely rare incidents of non-citizen voting. For these reasons, I urge you to reject this bill that would hinder the foundational right to vote for millions of Americans.
