Preserve Mail-In Voting to Ensure Accessibility and Voter Participation
To: Sen. Kim, Rep. Madsen, Gov. Shapiro
From: A verified voter in Harrisburg, PA
August 22, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent support shown by Pennsylvania congressional Republicans for President Trump's plan to eliminate mail-in ballots. This proposal, if implemented, would significantly undermine our democratic process and disenfranchise countless voters.
Mail-in voting is not only convenient but also secure and essential for many citizens. It allows voters like myself to thoroughly research candidates and make informed decisions without the pressure of long lines or time constraints at polling places. More importantly, it ensures that those with disabilities or health issues preventing them from easily leaving their homes can still exercise their fundamental right to vote.
The claims of widespread fraud in mail-in voting are unfounded. Voting officials across states have consistently found no evidence of significant election fraud in mail ballots or any other form of voting. The integrity of our elections is not compromised by mail-in voting; rather, it is enhanced by increasing accessibility and participation.
Governor Josh Shapiro correctly points out that the Constitution gives states the authority to set election rules. Any attempt to unilaterally ban mail-in voting through executive order would be an overreach of federal power and a violation of states' rights.
The SAVE Act, promoted by Rep. Scott Perry, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship for federal election voter registration, is a solution in search of a problem. There is no evidence of widespread voting by undocumented immigrants affecting election results. This act would likely create unnecessary barriers to voting for eligible citizens.
I urge you to stand against any efforts to eliminate mail-in voting or restrict voting access. Instead, please support measures that expand voting opportunities and ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy. The strength of our republic depends on the broadest possible citizen participation in elections, which mail-in voting helps to facilitate.
Your position on this issue will significantly influence my voting decisions in future elections. I look forward to hearing about your commitment to protecting mail-in voting and expanding voter access in Pennsylvania.
