I am writing to express grave concerns over the recent incident involving New York City Comptroller Brad Lander's arrest by ICE agents at an immigration courthouse. This disturbing event highlights the overreach and disregard for due process by federal immigration authorities in their escalating crackdown on immigrants in our city. It is unacceptable that ICE is conducting arrests of individuals attending immigration hearings without proper judicial warrants, in blatant violation of their constitutional rights and long-standing policies limiting enforcement actions at courthouses. This tactic creates an atmosphere of fear that deters immigrants from accessing the legal system and seeking justice. As public servants, we have a duty to protect the rights of all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. ICE's courthouse arrests not only undermine the judicial process but erode trust in our institutions and make our communities less safe. We cannot allow such unlawful and heavy-handed tactics to continue unchecked. I urge you to condemn these egregious actions by ICE and work to prevent immigration enforcement activities from impeding access to courts and due process for all. Our city must remain a welcoming place where immigrants can live without fear of being unjustly targeted and torn from their families. Preserving these fundamental values is crucial for upholding the rule of law and protecting the fabric of our diverse society.
