Public education should be a right for everyone

To: Rep. Issa, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Poway, CA

February 22

I am writing to strongly urge you to oppose any legislation aimed at dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, including H.R. 899. Doing so would have devastating consequences for students, educators, and families nationwide. The Department of Education plays a vital role in managing federal student loan programs, upholding civil rights protections, and ensuring that low-income students receive essential resources. Without it, states would be left to navigate these challenges alone, exacerbating educational disparities and putting millions of students at a disadvantage. Access to quality public education should be a fundamental right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. The Department of Education helps guarantee support for students with disabilities, enforces Title IX protections, and directs federal funding to schools and students who need it most. Its elimination would be a disastrous step backward. I urge you to reject this irresponsible legislation and safeguard the future of education in the United States. Please confirm that you will oppose any efforts to abolish the Department of Education.
