Reject Undermining Judicial Independence and Checks and Balances
To: Sen. Peters
From: A constituent in Farmington, MI
May 28
This "One Big Beautiful Bill" Act contains an alarming provision that would undermine the system of checks and balances and the independence of the federal judiciary. The proposal to defund the enforcement of contempt of court citations issued against government officials who defy court orders is a blatant attempt to allow the executive branch to ignore the law and court rulings with impunity. This retroactive measure shows a disturbing disregard for the rule of law and separation of powers. As a constituent, I urge you to oppose this dangerous overreach that would cripple the ability of federal courts to hold the government accountable. Our democracy relies on each branch respecting the authority and roles of the others. Stripping courts of contempt powers would effectively neuter the judiciary and give the executive branch unchecked power to violate rights and defy constitutional constraints. This provision represents a severe threat to our system of governance and democratic principles. I implore you to reject this unacceptable breach of checks and balances when the bill comes for a vote. Protecting an independent judiciary free from interference is vital to upholding the Constitution and preserving our democratic institutions. The American people deserve leaders who will safeguard these fundamental principles, not subvert them for partisan gain. Please stand firm against any efforts to undermine the rule of law.
