I am writing to express deep concern over the recent staffing cuts at land management agencies like the National Park Service and Forest Service. These dedicated public servants play a vital role in maintaining and protecting our public lands for all to enjoy. Their work is essential for ensuring safe outdoor recreation opportunities and preserving our natural heritage for future generations. The administration's decision to lay off around 10% of the workforce, including many newer employees and veterans, will have serious consequences. These front-line staff are crucial for trail maintenance, campground operations, visitor assistance, permitting, emergency response, and resource conservation efforts. Losing their expertise and manpower will directly impact the quality and accessibility of our treasured public lands and waters. As visitation continues to rise, we cannot afford to undermine the very agencies responsible for stewarding these cherished spaces. Robust staffing and resources are needed to meet public demand for outdoor recreation while sustainably managing these landscapes. The bipartisan EXPLORE Act, recently passed by Congress, aimed to enhance outdoor access and experiences on public lands, but its success hinges on having sufficient agency personnel to implement its vision. I urge you to take urgent action to reverse these detrimental staffing cuts and ensure our land management agencies are appropriately funded and staffed. Protecting our public lands and the outdoor recreation opportunities they provide is a matter of national importance, supporting local economies, public health, and our shared natural legacy. We must prioritize the conservation and responsible management of these irreplaceable resources for all Americans to enjoy now and in the future.
