Consider Co-Sponsoring the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Costa, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Visalia, CA

April 11

I’m writing to ask you to co-sponsor the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act. Right now, people with disabilities who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) aren’t allowed to have more than $2,000 in savings or assets. This outdated limit makes it hard for people to save for emergencies, a rental deposit, or retirement, and going over the limit can cause them to lose the benefits they rely on. This bill would raise the asset limit to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for married couples. It would also adjust the limit for inflation over time and end the unfair “marriage penalty” that caps couples’ combined savings at just $3,000. These changes would support greater financial independence and stability for people with disabilities, allowing them to work, save, and plan for the futurewithout risking their access to essential support. Please co-sponsor this important legislation. Thank you.
