Do not cut SNAP benefits. They are a desperate lifeline for folks in times of need. My husband, who was then my boyfriend, lost his career in the 2008 Recession. He applied to over 500 jobs and while he got call backs on 2, he got no offers. We had just moved to Chicago for me to attend graduate school and while I was working, it was part time and barely kept the rent paid. He applied for SNAP benefits and it saved us for the first year we were there. Literally saved us. We were able to eek our way through those extremely lean 2 years, and then we returned to a city where we both had work. SNAP provides a desperate lifeline for families in crisis. It’s embarrassing enough to apply for these services—please keep them available for people in times of need.
