According to a study by the CATO Institute (a libertarian think tank), at least 50 of the Venezuelans condemned to a concentration camp in El Salvador by the Trump administration were here legally.
Now, to be clear, legal status shouldn’t matter for this. It should be considered inherently inhumane to condemn anyone to a concentration camp, especially without due process.
But many of these men were just individuals seeking a better life, not some sort of hardened and violent criminals. They had a legal right to be here. Portraying them in any other way is simply false and is a deliberate deception.
This is just one of the many, many flaws in ICE’s treatment of migrants. We’re all aware that condemning these men to El Salvador was a political stunt. More thought was evidently given to the propaganda value than to any semblance of justice. Kristi Noem’s inability to answer basic questions before Congress (like whether or not Andry Hernandez Romero is alive, or what habeas corpus is) is further proof of that.
Bring these men home from El Salvador. Rein in ICE. Hold them accountable. Don’t feed the deceptive propaganda. Stand with the courts and uncover the truth.
