I am writing to urge you to support the Transgender Bill of Rights, recently reintroduced by Senator Ed Markey and Representative Pramila Jayapal. This comprehensive legislation would codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary people under federal law, ensuring access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security for an estimated 1.6 million trans adults living in the United States. While the Supreme Court affirmed in Bostock v. Clayton County that federal protection against discrimination on the basis of sex includes protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, trans people continue to face outsized discrimination in every area of life. This legislation would build on that precedent by amending the Civil Rights Act to ensure trans people have the same rights and protections as all other Americans, creating a level playing field where they no longer have to fight for equal treatment. The bill represents a moral commitment to constituents who deserve the same opportunities to thrive as everyone else. Representative Jayapal, who is the parent of a transgender child, articulated this vision clearly: ensuring that every single person has a chance to thrive, affirming that trans people belong and are worthy of the same rights as everyone else. This is not about special treatment but about equal protection under the law. At a time when discrimination and violence against trans people persist despite existing legal protections, this legislation provides the comprehensive framework needed to protect the civil rights of all Americans. I ask you to cosponsor and vote in favor of the Transgender Bill of Rights. Your constituents who are transgender or have transgender family members deserve to know their representative stands for equal protection under the law.
