An Open Letter

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins

From: A constituent in Southwest Harbor, ME

January 28

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recently leaked memo from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), which orders a pause on federal grants, loans, and financial assistance programs. This decision, if implemented, could have far-reaching and devastating consequences for countless citizens in Maine and across the nation. The pause reportedly targets crucial areas such as nongovernmental organizations, diversity and inclusion initiatives, environmental programs, and even life-saving services like food assistance, cancer research, and suicide prevention hotlines. While exceptions for Medicaid and Social Security benefits have been made, the broader scope of these cuts will undoubtedly harm vulnerable populations and destabilize institutions that Mainers rely on daily. Here in Maine, federal funding supports a range of critical programs, from assisting struggling families with food insecurity to helping universities innovate and provide opportunities for our future workforce. Halting these funds—especially during times of economic uncertainty—will ripple through our communities, leaving families, nonprofits, and educational institutions scrambling to make up for the sudden loss. Moreover, the memo undermines the authority of Congress, which has already approved these investments through legislation. As a citizen of Maine, I am alarmed at this unprecedented overreach and its implications for the balance of power within our democracy. I urge you, as our elected representative, to take immediate action to challenge and halt this misguided directive. The people of Maine are counting on you to ensure that federal resources are allocated as intended by law and to prevent unnecessary harm to those who depend on these programs. Please consider issuing a public statement, working with fellow representatives, and pursuing legislative or legal remedies to address this alarming situation. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to seeing your leadership in protecting the citizens of Maine and safeguarding the integrity of our democratic processes.
