Support STABLE Trade Policy Act for economic stability

To: Sen. Hagerty, Rep. Cohen, Sen. Blackburn

The Trump administration's tariffs on imports from allies like Mexico and Canada are poised to inflict significant economic harm on American families and businesses. These tariffs will drive up consumer costs on everyday goods like gasoline, cars, groceries, and household items by adding a 25% tax on imports from our closest trading partners. This reckless trade policy undermines our relationships with key allies and disrupts supply chains integral to many U.S. industries. Fortunately, there is a sensible legislative solution. The STABLE Trade Policy Act would reinstate Congressional oversight over tariffs imposed on allies and trade agreement partners. It requires the president to justify any proposed tariffs and obtain Congressional approval before implementing new import taxes on goods from allied nations. This commonsense measure would restore the constitutional balance of power and prevent unilateral trade actions that damage the economy and foreign relations. Congress must act to rein in the president's unfettered authority to levy tariffs under the guise of national security. The STABLE Trade Policy Act is a prudent step to protect American consumers and businesses from unnecessary costs while preserving productive trade ties with allies. Subjecting ally tariffs to Congressional review will promote stability, curb economic self-harm, and uphold U.S. global leadership. I urge you to support this bill to reclaim Congress's constitutional trade responsibilities.
