I am voting to encourage you to speak out against and vote NO on HR7661.
Banning books with “sexual content” and leaving the definition of what is deemed sexual content as vague is dangerous. People who ban books have never been on the right side of history.
Banning books with sexual content will also further enable the abuse of children and women. By banning books that deal with LGBTQIA, abuse, sexual assault, kids will not learn that it is wrong, or if it's happening to them that they are not alone, that they can get help. This will not protect anyone.
Parents have the right to choose what their children bring home from the library. But, no one should have the power to strip that choice over reading from parents and adults. If the government chooses to pass this bill into law, the US will be removing the long-enjoyed freedom of choice to read from its people.
I also want to remind you that the last time states tried to do this book banning thing, it backfired. By banning books with sexual content and violence, Bibles were removed from libraries, because they contained multiple passages containing sexual and violent content.
We the people do not want this.
Rather than wasting time on bills like this, we want you to focus on passing legislation that will actually protect us from harm: reasonable gun control, ensure free school lunch, fund food assistance programs, or how about some healthcare funding? If we have war money… surely we have money to care for the people here at home!
I urge you to get serious and work on legislation that We The People want. Or be voted out.
