I’m writing as a constituent urgently demanding your immediate intervention to stop ICE from returning a newborn baby—born just days ago in a local hospital—to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley. There is a known measles and RSV outbreak inside that facility. Both viruses are deadly to newborns, especially infants too young to be vaccinated or medically stable.
It is unconscionable that ICE is preparing to place a medically fragile infant back into a detention center experiencing active outbreaks of highly contagious pediatric diseases. No pediatrician would ever approve this. No child‑welfare standard allows this. And no government that claims to value families should permit it.
This is part of a broader pattern of neglect and unsafe conditions at Dilley, where infants, toddlers, and young children have been exposed to contaminated food, inadequate medical care, and unsanitary conditions. Returning a newborn to an outbreak zone is not just negligent — it is life‑threatening.
I am asking you to take immediate action:
1. Stop ICE from returning this newborn to Dilley.
2. Demand emergency medical review and immediate humanitarian release for all infants and medically vulnerable children.
3. Launch an investigation into disease control, medical care, and child‑safety failures at the Dilley facility.
4. Pursue legislation or oversight measures prohibiting the detention of infants and newborns entirely.
For a party that claims “family values,” allowing babies and children to be exposed to deadly diseases through government neglect is indefensible. This is a preventable tragedy in the making, and your leadership is urgently needed to stop it.
Please act now to protect this newborn and every child currently in ICE custody.
