I’ve been voting legally since I was 18, and for 30 years my driver’s license has always been enough. Under the SAVE Act, it wouldn’t be. Because I’ve been married twice, I would have to go back and produce multiple original documents, some out of state, just to prove I am who I am on my state issued ID, even if it’s a Real ID. That takes time and money that not everyone has. These are real barriers for millions of people, especially women, divorced women, survivors, naturalized citizens, and older voters, and it raises serious concerns under the 14th, 19th, and 24th Amendments.
This bill does not prevent voter fraud. Instead, it creates new barriers for people, disproportionately impacting women and domestic violence survivors like myself who may have changed their names for safety, or who may not have easy access to past documents.
Millions of voters who have legally cast ballots for decades will be affected. The bill adds new costs that many people cannot afford, and access to original records often requires time, travel, or may be impossible to obtain. We should be making voting more accessible, not creating unconstitutional barriers for legal voters. This bill does not protect the integrity of elections and instead denies or delays eligible citizens’ right to vote.
