Urgent: Investigate DOGE for Potential Data Theft and Privacy Violations
To: Rep. Stansbury
From: A constituent in Rio Rancho, NM
August 27, 2025
I am writing to express my grave concern over the recent whistleblower complaint filed by the Government Accountability Project on behalf of Charles Borges, the chief data officer at the Social Security Administration (SSA). This alarming report alleges that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has potentially compromised the sensitive data of over 300 million Americans.
The complaint outlines serious accusations against DOGE, including uploading Social Security data to an insufficiently secured cloud server without proper oversight. This action may constitute systemic data security violations, unrestricted access to highly sensitive information, and potential breaches of SSA protocols and federal privacy laws.
While no confirmed data breaches have been reported yet, the lack of verified audit mechanisms is deeply troubling. The potential for identity theft and loss of benefits for millions of Americans is a risk we cannot afford to ignore. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and various advocacy groups have rightly condemned these actions, highlighting the urgent need for immediate intervention.
Given the severity of these allegations and the vast number of Americans potentially affected, I strongly urge you to take immediate action. Specifically, I request that you:
1. Call for an immediate congressional investigation into DOGE's handling of SSA data.
2. Refer this matter to the Department of Justice for a thorough criminal investigation and potential indictment of responsible parties.
3. Implement emergency measures to secure the exposed data and prevent any unauthorized access.
4. Establish an independent audit of all government agencies' data security practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The integrity of our Social Security system and the privacy of 300 million Americans are at stake. Swift and decisive action is crucial to protect our citizens from potential fraud and to hold those responsible accountable. We must send a clear message that the mishandling of sensitive government data will not be tolerated.
I look forward to your prompt response detailing the steps you will take to address this critical issue. The American people deserve nothing less than full transparency and immediate action to safeguard their personal information and financial security.
