Reject Casey Means for Surgeon General
To: Rep. Kiley, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump
From: A constituent in Auburn, CA
February 25
I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose the confirmation of Dr. Casey Means as the next United States Surgeon General. The Surgeon General serves as the nation’s leading public health communicator and a trusted voice guiding Americans through medical crises, disease prevention, and science based health policy. This role demands deep clinical credibility, active engagement in evidence based medicine, and broad trust across the medical and scientific community. Dr. Means does not meet that standard. Although she holds a medical degree, Dr. Means is not currently practicing medicine and maintains an inactive medical license. Her public profile and professional influence stem primarily from her work as a wellness influencer, author, and entrepreneur rather than from sustained clinical or public health leadership. Experts and public health organizations have raised serious concerns that her views frequently challenge established medical consensus and could elevate unproven or misleading health claims if amplified through the authority of the Surgeon General’s office. The position of Surgeon General is not intended to be an experimental platform or a branding opportunity. It is a role grounded in scientific rigor and public trust. At a time when Americans already face widespread confusion and declining confidence in health institutions, appointing a figure closely associated with wellness marketing and controversial health messaging risks further eroding confidence in evidence-based medicine. These concerns are especially urgent given the current leadership environment at the Department of Health and Human Services. With Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s tenure already generating alarm among many public health experts due to his history of promoting medically disputed claims, confirming another nominee perceived as outside the scientific mainstream would compound instability at a moment when clear, credible guidance is essential. Americans deserve a Surgeon General whose qualifications are unquestioned, whose experience reflects sustained medical practice or public health leadership, and whose guidance is rooted firmly in scientific consensus rather than personal ideology or influencer culture. I respectfully urge you to vote against this confirmation and to advocate for a nominee with demonstrated expertise, active clinical credibility, and the ability to unite, rather than divide, the public health community. Thank you for your time and for your service to our state and country.
