Close Detention Centers and Ensure Access to Water

To: Rep. Casar, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Manor, TX

March 10

I need you to vote to close immigration detention centers and ensure that people in custody have immediate access to clean water. These facilities are inhumane and unnecessary. Detention centers separate families, deny people basic necessities, and warehouse human beings in conditions that violate their dignity. Reports consistently show detainees lack adequate water, medical care, and sanitation. No one should be caged while awaiting a hearing or resolution of their case. There are proven alternatives to detention that cost less and work better. Community-based programs allow people to live with family or sponsors while attending their immigration proceedings. These programs have compliance rates above 90 percent and cost a fraction of what we spend on detention. Release people from these facilities now. Guarantee access to clean water and basic necessities for anyone still in custody. End contracts with private prison companies profiting from human suffering. We can have a functioning immigration system without locking people up.
