The Trump administration needs to stop using American diplomatic power to export anti-LGBTQ discrimination onto the world stage. Current and former officials from the State Department and HHS are actively backing a new "Pro-Life, Pro-Family Core Group" at the United Nations — a body explicitly designed to undermine the existing LGBTI Core Group, which has protected LGBTQ people in U.N. human rights resolutions since 2008. This country already pulled out of that group. Now it wants to build the opposition to it.
The coalition behind this effort includes SPLC-designated hate groups, far-right politicians, and Valerie Huber, a former HHS official whose framework has already been adopted in Uganda, where gay sex is punishable by death. Ipas warns the group would enable coordinated voting to "dilute, block, or impose conditions" on sexual and reproductive rights protections globally. That's not American leadership — that's exporting hatred with a diplomatic stamp on it.
Discrimination at home is bad enough. Using U.S. influence to organize a global anti-LGBTQ coalition at the United Nations is a different order of harm entirely. Speak out against this initiative and push back on any administration support for it.
